used for landscaping purposes. They are often planted for their outstanding fall foliage. However, Red (Acer rubrum) may be planted for their attractive spring flower; and Sugar maples (Acer saccharum) are favored for the wonderful shade they cast. Most maples do well in a fairly wide soil pH range, but their tolerance to salt and drought does vary. For example, certain species such as red maple thrive in fairly moist soils, while sugar maple grows best in well-drained soils.

Healthy community trees are the foundation of healthy forests. Since species adaptability differs and the conditions of the urban environment are often harsh, with a variety of stresses from both above and below ground, proper selection of tree species and planting site is crucial. Careful planning should ensure that the “right plant” is established in the “right place”. The wrong tree on the wrong site can outgrow the planting area, damage roads, foundations and sidewalks, or be susceptible to diseases and insect infestations. Problems can be avoided through completing a site assessment and species selection.
